Getting started with Hedroom

Install it, say yes or no to two small things, and let it look around. Setup asks for no admin password and no Full Disk Access.

These steps describe Hedroom 1.0. The app is not released yet, so there is no public build to follow them on today.

What you need

  • A Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later).
  • macOS 15 Sequoia or later. Intel Macs are not supported.

1. Install

  1. Open the downloaded disk image from the download page.
  2. Drag Hedroom to Applications.
  3. Open Hedroom.

2. The four setup steps

Hedroom opens a setup window. It says "Step 1 of 4" and so on.

  1. Welcome. "Your Mac, explained." Press Get started.
  2. Our promises. "What Hedroom will never do": no memory-clearing button, no scare scans, macOS left alone, and your usage stays on your Mac. Press Sounds good. The same list is on What Hedroom never does.
  3. Two quick things. "No admin password. No Full Disk Access." Here you choose:
    • Notifications. Press Allow so Hedroom can tell you when an app starts leaking. If macOS asks, say yes. If you say no, the button reads Ask again, and Hedroom uses the menu bar dot instead. You can change this later in System Settings › Notifications.
    • Open at login. A switch. It starts Hedroom when you log in so it can keep watching. It is on by default. Turn it off if you prefer to open Hedroom yourself.
Then press Run my first check.
  4. Looking around. Hedroom reads memory pressure, CPU, caches and thermals once, for a few seconds. It then shows "Here's your Mac." with what it found. Press Open Hedroom. Or press See the suggested rule to look at a rule Hedroom suggests, which stays off until you turn it on.

Setup needs no card and no account. Monitoring, explanations, alerts and the storage scan are free from the first minute, and stay free.

Unlock Pro with a license key

Fixes, rules, new receipts and cleanup are part of Pro. Pro is a subscription that starts with a 7-day free trial. The trial starts when you pick a plan on the pricing page, and it needs a card. You can cancel before it ends and pay nothing. The free trial is for first-time customers. If you have already had a trial with the same email address or the same card, the first payment is taken at once.

Checkout opens when the first signed build is published, because the 7-day trial starts the moment you pay. Until then the steps below are what to expect. The waitlist emails you once, when it is ready.

  1. Pick a plan on the pricing page and finish checkout with Stripe.
  2. The welcome page shows your license key once. Copy it. It is also emailed to you.
  3. In Hedroom, open Settings, press Enter license key, paste the key and press Activate. Hedroom says "You're Pro."

To cancel, update your card or see invoices, use Manage your subscription. If you lose the key, it can send you a new one. More: Move your license.

3. Find your way around

The main window has these sections:

  • Today. How your Mac is doing, and the one thing that matters, if there is one. "All good" is a normal answer.
  • Memory and CPU & Energy. The live numbers, with an explanation of each.
  • Storage. A scan of caches and leftovers. Nothing is removed without your say-so.
  • Rules. Standing instructions. Every template starts off.
  • Receipts. The measured result of everything Hedroom has done. How to read one.
  • Tools. Startup items, the Display advisor, Power & fans, Local AI headroom and the browser companion.

Hedroom also lives in the menu bar, with a small panel for a quick look. Settings covers how often it checks, notifications, the license and uninstalling.

4. What to expect in the first hours

  • Hedroom is learning what is normal for your Mac. It says so on screen: "Leak alerts start after a few hours." It compares each app with its own usual size over time.
  • Until then it can still flag an app that is unusually large and still growing, but it says "unusually large" and not a ratio.
  • It never acts on its own at the start. Fixes happen when you press the button. Rules are off until you turn them on. Each action gets a receipt.
  • Hedroom is built to stay light: under 0.5% of one core and 80 MB. See the measured figures.
