Tool
Startup items
Free to see, Pro to change
See what starts when you log in, what each item costs in memory, and which ones you seem not to use.
What it does
- Lists launch agents and daemons from your own LaunchAgents folder and from /Library, with who signed each one and why it starts.
- Shows each item's memory five minutes after your last login, or a typical size marked with "~" until it has watched one.
- Suggests turning an item off only if its program is gone, or you used the app in at most 1 of your last 10 logins. It waits until it has watched 10 logins.
- After a switch, measures your next login and writes a receipt.
What it never does
- Delete anything. Turning an item off renames its file so it does not start at your next login. Turning it on puts the name back.
- List or touch Apple's own items.
- Suggest background-only apps, backup apps or sync apps, or apps it has never seen run.
- Stop something that is running right now. It only keeps it from starting next time.
- Turn off a batch without showing you each item with a checkbox first.
Free or Pro
The list is free. Turning an item off or on is part of Pro.
Honest limits
- Hedroom switches items in your own LaunchAgents folder. For items in /Library/LaunchAgents it opens Login Items in System Settings. Items in /Library/LaunchDaemons are listed but cannot be switched yet.
- Apps that add themselves in System Settings › Login Items cannot be listed without admin rights. Use Login Items for those.
- Until it has watched enough logins, it says it is still learning and suggests nothing.
